** PRESS RELEASE **
Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch to Host Design Workshops and Charrette Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch Mission Statement
Preservation of the Silver Saddle Ranch and its cultural, historical,
and natural resources both as open space and as a working ranch.
The Friends of Silver Saddle Ranch (FOSSR) was awarded an in-kind grant from the National Park Service's Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program 20 2006. The original goal for the grant was to develop and execute a planning and design charrette for the Silver Saddle Ranch and adjacent Prison Hill Recreation Area. Once the process began we decided to include the Carson River corridor from just below the Mexican Dam north to approximately the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) facility at Morgan Mill Road.
A charrette is an intensive brainstorming session where volunteer participants sketch and illustrate their ideas for planning and design solutions and present them to the community for feedback. FOSSR is the lead in a working partnership with the City of Carson and BLM Carson City Field Office. The purpose of the charrette is to create a community wide vision for the Silver Saddle Ranch and the Carson River.
There will be two public workshops leading up to the charrette. These workshops are scheduled for April 24th and May 8. The charrette itself will be held May 29-31. At the conclusion of the charrette all materials will be assembled and a cohesive plan which will be used to increase awareness and stewardship of Silver Saddle Ranch and the Carson River . Additional outcomes are expected to be greater trails connectivity and increased environmental and outdoor education programs at Silver Saddle Ranch.
A charrette brings together experts in the field to develop ideas on how to improve a natural and/or cultural resource. The output are maps and designs that offer solutions to issues such as preservation, access and use, interpretation, and development. The term charrette is French for cart. In the early 20th century, professors from the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris would send a cart to pick up students' work at the submission deadlines. Some students, frantic to complete their drawings, would ride on the cart and continue working as it rolled down the street, hence, working “en charrette”.
Additional information on the charrette can be obtained by contacting Nancy Santos at 884-1570 or info@fossr.org.
